Introduction

The Campus School of Carlow University has a wide variety of athletics and encourages students to participate. Detailed information and registration forms for specific activities will be sent home and are also available on-line. Participation in athletics and extracurricular activities is a privilege. Students may be excluded from participation if it interferes with academic achievement. It is essential that each student fulfill his or her academic responsibilities before participating in athletic contests.

As an independent school, The Campus School of Carlow University expects good sportsmanship of all players, coaches, and fans. We value spirited and fair play as well as spirited and positive support for our teams. Players and coaches should remember that they represent themselves and the school before, during, and after games. Spectators are expected to be respectful of players, coaches, and officials. Unacceptable behavior may result in suspension from athletics or extracurricular activities.

All students who are participating in a Campus School sponsored sport must have a signed release and physical examination before they begin to participate. Additionally, there is a $90 fee to participate in JV and Varsity athletics. The fee is used to cover the cost of paid coaches, uniforms, officials, equipment, bus transportation, league fees, and tournaments. Students are expected to supply their own practice clothing and appropriate athletic shoes.

At times a student’s health can affect his or her participation in athletic contests. For a student to fully participate in a game he or she must be present at school on time on the day of a practice or game.

Athletic activities include:

  • Basketball (JV & Varsity)
  • Basketball (Developmental)
  • Cross Country (3 - 8)
  • Ski Club (6 - 8)

Basketball

Developmental

  • Team members (grades 3- 4) will be encouraged to learn basic skills while learning the fundamentals of basketball rather than competing.
  • All team members will receive an equal amount of playing time.

JV and Varsity

  • The boys and girls teams participate in the Diocesan Basketball League.
  • Practice begins in October and competition begins in November. One to two games are held weekly in the

evenings or on weekends. The season continues through March.

  • JV members (grades 5-6) are encouraged to refine basic skills and continue to learn the basic fundamentals.
  • Varsity members (grades 7 - 8) play at a higher level of Competition while achieving team goals.

Cross Country

  • Both girls and boys in grades 3-8 compete on teams that are broken into JV Girls; JV Boys; Varsity Girls; and Varsity Boys.
  • The team practices begin in early to mid-August and occurs twice weekly after school during the season.
  • The team competes in approximately 5 meets during September and October. Championships are held mid October.
  • Parents are a crucial element to the success of the Cross Country program, and we welcome (and encourage) at least 4 volunteer parents to run with the team on practice days. This is a great assistance to the coach, mainly in helping to keep track of up to 30 runners, all at various levels of fitness and speeds. Information will be mailed to all parents with children in these grades at the beginning of June.

Ski Club

  • Children in grades 6-8 can attend Hidden Valley Ski

resort on Friday evenings. Children are transported by bus after school and are then returned to school at 11pm.

Soccer

  • Carlow’s JV and Varsity soccer teams participate in a

Diocesan co-ed league for students in grades 4-8. Once a week practices will begin in March and end in May. Games occur once or twice weekly, usually on the weekends.

  • JV members (grades 4-6) are encouraged to

refine basic skills and continue to learn the basic fundamentals. Varsity members (grades 7-8) play at a higher level of competition while achieving team goals.

Swim Club

  • A swim club is offered for students in grades 2-6,

February through April, for students interested in improving their skills.

Tennis

  • Tennis occurs in the form of developmental lessons from

a professional tennis instructor. Students from K-8 are offered lessons for a fee, and tournament play is optional.

  • Lessons take place once a week in the Campus School

gym after school.

Additional Athletic Opportunities

  • The East End Athletic Association sponsors lacrosse and

field hockey teams for boys and girls. Carlow students are welcome to play within this organization.
