Minutes

1. The meeting was called to order by PTA President, Dana Casale at 8:30 AM.

2. Dana introduced the administrators from Aladdin Food Services, Paul Kowalczyk, District Manager, Chef Dennis, Corporate Chef, David Harris, Director of Carlow Cafeteria and Bonnie Bland, nutritionist for Aladdin. Paul began by explaining some of the changes to the cafeteria menu that will be forthcoming. Their plan is to revamp each line in the cafeteria over the next couple of months. He introduced Dave Harris, the new Director of Carlow Cafeteria. Dave has been at Carlow for about two weeks. He has extensive experience in food service and includes experience in feeding children. The menu will be available on line soon. It will be posted on the PTA website and through the Campus School. Communication with the parents will be improved and they asked for feedback from parents. Foods that are already in place for our children are wheat crust pizza, vegetables, salad bar and pasta. It was suggested to make pizza available everyday, limit the times fried foods are offered, offer sliced apples and oranges, and provide nutrition education to students in gym class. It was also suggested to have an invite your parent to lunch day so parents can make educated suggestions to the staff of the cafeteria.

Bonnie displayed some of the educational props available to help educate staff, children and parents about proper nutrition. Bulletin boards will post this information in the cafeteria. She also suggested posting the nutritional information on the website with the menu so children and parents know the nutrition content of the food served.

March is National Nutrition Month. Activities are planned for this time.

Dave will do an email blast to families to keep everyone aware of changes in the cafeteria. His email address is mailto:DHarris@alladinfood.com.

One parent complimented the food in Carlow’s Cafeteria. Many parents echoed the compliment and stated the cafeteria is much brighter, too.

3. Dana asked that everyone donate two dozen baked goods to the bake sale that will take place before the Christmas concert and at intermission. These baked items can be dropped off the day of the concert in the office. The concert is December 13.

Next week (December 3 through the 7) parents are asked to spend some time after school in the library wrapping gifts for the Christmas Bazaar. Ros McCorkle purchased great gifts for the children to buy during the bazaar. This year, one item will be on display, while the children will purchase the already wrapped package to place under your tree. Please meet in the library after school to help wrap some packages. If you are able to donate some wrap, it will also be appreciated.

Theresa Hassett asked that the PTA help fund the updated virus software, Nannyware. This software is already in use and needs to be updated. The cost to update is $1295. The PTA will assist with the purchase of this product. Dana is checking on the license period for this product. Thank you to Mary Kiernan for the PTA website. The website continues to be updated. It is a wonderful communication tool for the PTA. The sports schedules will be posted as soon as they are available.

Kidstuff books are available in the office for $25 dollars. They are entertainment coupons for children. Proceeds benefit the Carlow PTA. Please stop in the office and purchase one or more. They make great stocking stuffers.

Discussion ensued about the upper school socials. Suggestions made will be brought back to Ms. Hassett and the upper school student council. Dr. Balzano will discuss with this group and make the final decision on inviting other schools to our dances, parent participation, etc.

The meeting was adjourned at 9:45 AM. This was the last meeting of 2007. Please join us for our January meeting, January 9, 2008 at 8:30AM in the Carlow Cafeteria.

If enough parents would prefer a night time meeting in January (same date) over a morning meeting, please let either Dana or any of the PTA officers know. We would like to make the meetings more accessible for all parents.

Have a joyous Holiday Season.
