Carlow Campus School PTA Meeting

September 16, 2008

Minutes

Dana Casale, PTA President, opened the meeting on Sep.16, 2008 at 7:00pm. The agenda for the meeting was school athletics.

Dana introduced Jen Horwat, Athletic Director of the Campus School. Jen has put together an Athletic Handbook describing all sport activities offered, grades and genders of participants, season, time commitment, fees and team focus. Please pick up a copy of this handbook in the office for complete information.

Mary Kiernan discussed the Innisbrook Gift wrap drive. Packets have gone home with your children and the drive ends Oct.3. There is also a website www.innisbrook.com. Our school code is 121157. Family and friends are able to access this site for year-round sales. Mary stressed that no students should do door-to-door sales unless there is an adult with them. The 50 percent profit helps to fund athletics.

The various coaches were introduced and talked about their expectations for the players. Most coaches are looking for parents to help out.

Jamaal Hinton will be coaching 3rd and 4th grade boys developmental basketball. Practice is Fridays 3-5pm. Games are usually on Saturdays.

Dan Slain will coach girl’s developmental basketball. The students will work on set skills and everyone gets to play.

JV and Varsity boy’s basketball will be coached by Jerry and David McMeekin. Jerry is hoping for a successful season.

Mallorie Winn was a Pitt basketball player and will be coaching girl’s JV and Varsity basketball. Practices are Mondays and Wednesdays after school until 5:30pm.

Mark Haffner is teaching tennis, as a non-competitive sport. He'll be using ideas from his motivational book, "Overcoming the Odds", to encourage positive play.

Dana Casale coached the cross country team this year. It is available for grades 3-8 (check if your 2nd grader is eligible), practice is twice a week with 5 meets. 30 children signed up this year and have exceeded all expectations. Kids build up to a mile run and must be enthusiastic.

Soccer for 3rd and 4th grades will be coached by Jerry Paytas. It will be 8 on 8 or 11 on 11 depending on the number of participants. Focus is on developing skills and starts in the spring after the March break.

Scott Glassman is coaching 5th and 6th JV Soccer.

Ron Petnuch is coaching 7th and 8th grade Varsity Soccer. He likes the team to win, but also wants the kids to have fun.

All soccer levels play their games on the same day. Students are bused from school to the practice field at Schenley Park, the home field is Brashear High School. Parents must arrange for pick-up at the park. Games are on Saturday. There is the possibility of some 2nd graders being allowed to play soccer, check with the coach.

George Sliman, Director of Athletics at Carlow University, also spoke. George has been at the university for 10 years and coached for 25 years. He wanted parents to be aware of what expectations they and their children should have about a sport. Parents should think about why and whether they want their kids to play, what do they consider a successful season, goals for their child and what will they gain. What happens after the game? Kids may need time and space after a game, rather than rehashing what happened. George recommends releasing children to the game. It's their activity and they may have different goals than their parents. It may just be fun for them.

Parents should model appropriate behavior at games for their children to learn from. There should only be one instructional voice (the coach)at a game. Focus should be on the team and team goals. Parents can also teach children how to approach coaches to solve conflict.

Almost every sport needs parent volunteers, please see individual coaches or contact Dana about opportunities. Again, pick up the Athletic Handbook, it has most of the information on each sport that parents will need.

A sports banquet was also suggested, more discussion to follow.

The meeting ended at 8:10pm
